Overview
K2 (8,611m)—also known as Chogori, meaning “King of Mountains” in Balti—is the second-highest mountain in the world and arguably the most difficult to climb. Towering over the Karakoram Range, K2’s majestic pyramid rises sharply above the Baltoro Glacier, commanding respect from even the most seasoned mountaineers.
Unlike Everest, K2 has no easy route. It is more remote, more technical, and less forgiving. This is why it’s earned the reputation as the “Savage Mountain”—beautiful, deadly, and thrilling. Every successful ascent is a badge of honor in the mountaineering world.
Climbing Legacy
The first exploration began in 1887, led by British surveyors. In 1902, Oscar-J.L. Eckenstein led the first climbing attempt, followed by an Italian expedition in 1909 under Duke of Abruzzi, who mapped the now-famous Abruzzi Ridge.
Finally, in 1954, Italians Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni reached the summit, marking the first human conquest of K2. Today, K2 remains the ultimate goal for elite climbers, with fewer summits than Everest and a far higher fatality rate.
