Organized by PakJourney – Explore Beyond Limits
Overview
K2 (8611m), also known as Chogori—meaning “The King of Mountains” in Balti—is the second highest peak on earth and one of the most formidable climbing challenges for mountaineers worldwide. Towering on the Pak-China border within the rugged Karakoram Range, K2 is a majestic combination of rock, ice, and snow. From its base at 6,000m upwards, the mountain transforms into a sea of glaciers and snow fields that test the grit of even the most seasoned climbers.
The journey to K2 begins in Skardu, a scenic mountain town in Gilgit-Baltistan, accessible via road or flight from Islamabad. The trail leads through the legendary Shigar Valley, Askole village, and the mighty Baltoro Glacier, eventually reaching the Concordia confluence—one of the most spectacular alpine arenas on the planet.
Our 60-day expedition includes acclimatization, a technical climb via the famous Abruzzi Spur, and reserve days for summit attempts and weather delays.
Historical Background
- 1887: First British surveyor enters the region from Kashmir.
- 1902: First K2 expedition led by Oscar-J-L Eckevstien.
- 1909: Italian expedition led by Duke of Abruzzi attempts K2; the Abruzzi Spur is named after him.
- 1954: Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni of Italy successfully summit K2—the first humans to stand atop the mountain.
Since then, climbers from around the world have taken on K2’s various ridges and faces, with triumphs and tragedies adding to the mountain’s legendary status.
